From Press Boxes to Pathology: Six Years of Learning, Growing, and Uniting with LigoLab
May 6, 2025
Six years ago, I made a major career pivot.
After spending two decades immersed in professional sports, where everything is measured in wins and losses, I stepped into a new arena: pathology lab report software technology, specifically in laboratory information systems (LIS systems) and lab revenue cycle management (lab RCM).
At the time, it was a dramatic change. Sports PR is fast-paced, emotional, and public-facing. Everyone - from coaches to fans - knows when your team is succeeding (or falling short). So, when I first joined LigoLab in the fall of 2019, I didn’t know what to expect. I was overwhelmed by new acronyms, technical jargon, and a healthcare ecosystem I hadn’t yet begun to understand.
What are laboratory information systems? How does lab billing work? What happens to a specimen once it's collected? I was starting from scratch.
But over time - and now, after six years of working with some of the most talented professionals in the lab information system industry—I’ve come to understand that my old world and my new world have more in common than I initially thought.

Technology Is the Team Behind the Team
In professional sports, success relies on every department working in sync: coaching, scouting, development, sales, marketing, analytics, and more. Ownership has to provide vision and investment. And while the fans see the product on the field, they don’t see the complex infrastructure that supports it.
Laboratory operations are no different.
Behind every accurate diagnosis, behind every timely test result, lies a coordinated system of people, technology, and workflows. It’s not just about lab techs or pathologists doing their jobs well - it’s about giving them the right diagnostic lab software tools to thrive.
That’s what LigoLab has shown me again and again.

LigoLab: A Front-Row Seat to LIS Software Innovation
When I joined the LIS company in 2019, I was impressed by the vision: an all-in-one, fully integrated medical LIS and lab RCM platform that unified lab operations from start to finish - from order entry to accessioning, from diagnosis to the laboratory billing process. But over the years, I’ve gone beyond the vision. I’ve seen the execution.
Here’s What I’ve Learned About LigoLab Since Those Early Days:
1. It’s Not Just Laboratory Information System Software - It’s a Philosophy
“Ligo” is Latin for “to unite.” That spirit runs through everything the LIS software company does. This isn’t a LIS lab vendor-client relationship. It’s a partnership. LigoLab’s success is tied to the success of its lab customers, and that shared mission creates a level of collaboration and accountability that I rarely saw in my previous industry.
The platform itself is a reflection of that unity. Instead of forcing labs to juggle multiple disconnected laboratory software systems (healthcare LIS, lab billing, compliance tracking, QC, digital pathology, etc.), LigoLab unifies all departments and workflows within one streamlined, user-friendly informatics platform.

2. Lab Professionals Built This LIS System Platform
Over the past six years, I’ve worked alongside LigoLab team members who came directly from clinical and anatomic pathology labs. Many were accessioners, techs, or LIS system administrators themselves. That real-world experience is baked into the platform, and it shows.
It’s in the customizable dashboards, the logical workflow automation, the built-in compliance features, and the fast, frictionless reporting tools. The platform wasn’t designed in a vacuum. It was built for the people who use it every day.

3. The Medical LIS and Lab Billing Pricing Model Is a Game-Changer
One of the first things that struck me - and something I’ve come to appreciate more each year - is how aligned LigoLab’s pricing is with its values.
There are no upfront licensing costs or expensive capital investments. Instead, it’s a transactional pricing model based on tiers: as the lab grows, LigoLab grows with it. This structure removes barriers for labs of all sizes to access cutting-edge pathology lab software technology, and it turns LigoLab into a true stakeholder in the lab’s success.
I often compare this to professional sports teams, which develop talent internally rather than overpaying in free agency. It’s smart, sustainable, and future-focused.

4. Continuous Lab Information System Evolution is the Norm
In 2019, LigoLab’s unified medical LIS and lab RCM platform was already ahead of its time. But since then, I’ve watched the company rapidly innovate, adding:
- Support for digital pathology solutions
- Tools for LDT validation, tracking, and FDA compliance
- Advanced QC modules and lab analytics
- Rule-based automation that eliminates bottlenecks
- Real-time integration with payer systems and clearinghouses
- Interactive pathology reports and block/slide tracking tools
- Powerful multi-site, multi-specialty configurability for scaling labs
This isn’t a static pathology lab software product. It evolves alongside industry needs and customer feedback, something I’ve seen firsthand in countless strategy and planning sessions.

5. The Stakes Are Higher Than I Ever Realized
Working in sports, you deal with passion, loyalty, and pressure. But working in healthcare (specifically in pathology), you realize the stakes are much more profound.
We’re not just helping a team win a game. We’re enabling labs to diagnose disease faster, improve patient outcomes, and stay financially viable in a rapidly changing reimbursement landscape.
That sense of mission drives everything we do at LigoLab. It’s why the LIS company invests so much into customer support, implementation, and ongoing optimization. The work matters. People’s lives and health depend on it.

A Final Reflection
Looking back, I realize how much I’ve grown professionally and personally. The learning curve was steep, but so was the payoff.
I now understand that medical LIS and RCM systems are not back-office tools - they are the central nervous system of a lab and are mission-critical to its success. And just like in sports, the teams that embrace data, technology, and collaboration are the ones that thrive.
LigoLab empowers those teams by providing more than just a LIS medical software platform - it delivers a strategic foundation for labs to scale, optimize, and lead.
Six years in, I’m proud to play a small part in telling that story.
